What Tessaly says

Hail Tessaly in Kithicor:

You have spent a long time killing the things that live below, . Have you ever wondered what it is like to be one of them? I can lend you a [shape]. Every shape leaves something behind, if you want to know about the [gear].

Ask about a [shape]:

Tonight I have more than one shape to lend: [scarecrow] [banshee] [werewolf] [bat] [masquerade]. Go alone; a shape will not hold two of you.

Pick [banshee]:

Mask-cutters are taking the faces of the drowned dead in Guk. Someone has to keen for the mourners and keep their wake going. Go alone. The shape will not hold two of you. Are you [ready]?

Say [ready] to go. You must not be in a group.

Your form

A drowned banshee, a caster that leeches. The form fights at level 64, whatever your own level is. - Signature: Funeral Dirge - Shape abilities: Throw Stone, Shadow Bolt (ranged), Drain Life (leech) - Passives: Innate Intelligence, Innate Wisdom, Eyes Wide Open, Mental Clarity - Stats: 23,000 HP, 12,000 mana, 260 AC

How it plays out

"The Long Night has come to Guk. You wake in the shape of a drowned banshee, and somewhere below, knives are cutting the faces from the drowned dead."

  1. Keen at the three pools. "Three mourning pools hold the wake. Keen at each in turn and the dead will stay asleep." The pools go one at a time, in order. When one is ready: "A mourning pool stirs. [Hail] it and keen." Hail it and stay close to it for 40 seconds: "You keen over the water. Stay beside the pool for 40 seconds." While you keen, mask-cutters (level 60) come up out of the water by that pool: two at the first pool, two at the second, three at the third. If you move away: "Your keening breaks off. Hail the pool to begin again." If you hail the wrong pool: "This pool is still. Another one stirs." Each pool you finish: "The pool falls quiet. The drowned beneath it sleep on." When all three are done: "All three pools are quiet. Down the passage, two mourners are weeping in chains."
  2. Settle two debts. "Two collectors hold a mourner each, for debts the drowned owed in life. For each, choose: [take] the debt on yourself and fight for it, or [forgive] it and fetch the mourner's token." Hail each collector and answer [take] or [forgive]:
  3. Collector Vane (level 62): "This one owes the Mask-Taker a face. She drowned before she paid." Take: "You want her debt, ghost? Then pay it in full." and you fight him. When he dies: "Collector Vane falls. His mourner drifts back to the wake." Forgive: "Forgive it? Her token sank in the north pool. Bring it up and she walks." Fetch the mourner's token from the north water and hail it. "Paid. Take your weeper."
  4. Collector Harrow (level 62): "Her husband promised us his mask. He ran. She stays." Take: "Then you stand in for him." and you fight him. When he dies: "Collector Harrow falls. His mourner drifts back to the wake." Forgive: "His token is in the west hall. Bring it and we are square." Fetch the husband's token from the west hall and hail it. "Square. Go and sing your songs."

Every debt you take cuts 10% off Mother Sallow's health before the fight starts. Every debt you forgive keeps one of her wake candles lit for good. When both are settled: "The mourners are free. In the wake room, Mother Sallow is snuffing the candles one by one." 3. Mother Sallow, the Weeping Knife (level 64). She shouts: "A banshee at my wake? Then I will cut your face last." "Mother Sallow, the Weeping Knife, stands among the wake candles. Each dark candle heals her; [hail] a candle to relight it." If you took debts, you also hear how many have already cut her. If you forgave debts, you hear how many candles the freed mourners keep lit for good. There are four candles. Every 20 seconds one goes out: "A wake candle gutters out. Mother Sallow drinks the dark." Hail it to light it again: "You keen softly and the candle takes light again." A candle kept lit by a forgiven debt (a kept candle) never goes out. At 50% health: "A weeping knife answers its mother's call!" and a weeping knife (level 62) joins the fight. When she dies: "Mother Sallow falls among the candles. Every mask she cut falls quiet with her." 4. The ending. "The wake goes on. The drowned of Guk keep their faces tonight." Then: "Among Mother Sallow's knives is a mask with no face behind it, stitched with one name: Hale Morrow." A win gives one piece of Monstrous Mayhem armor (see the overview).

If the run fails: "Your keening fades, and the shape you wore sinks back into the water."
